We want to travel in India for a couple of months, working our way overground from Goa to Delhi. How much spending money would we need roughly, including accommodation and trains?
Thanks!

About Indian Rupees 5,000 should be fine for travel if you are taking trains. Taxis would be significantly more expensive for inter-city travel.
Accommodation is extremely varied, but I think you should be able to find simple hotels for about Indian Rupees 2,500 in Goa, about 1,500 between Goa and Delhi, and about 2,500 to 3,000 in Delhi. It all depends on where you decide to stay of course, and for how long.
The big variable is, I think, the level of comfort in your hotels. I always spend the extra money for air conditioning (other than hill stations, northern India, etc), since it adds only a few bucks per night, and India can be *really* hot and humid. When you take trains, they are not „cheap” once you move up to AC 2-tier or 3-tier. But, as compared to Europe or Britain, they are not expensive either. Since you will be in India for a few months, I highly recommend trains, as they are a way to see a slice of Indian life.
I think the estimate of about $1000 is pretty good. You can probably get very comfortable rooms for $15/night without much searching or haggling; and if that is split between 2 people, it is dirt-cheap. You will experiment with trying different foods, so figure on $10 per person, per day to eat and drink (I spent much less myself in any given day, but this budget allowed me to splurge occasionally whenever I wanted something nice.). You will of course each bring a few hundred dollars extra, for emergencies. But it’s quite likely that you will either not spend any of that money, or, will spend it all the last few days on the amazing clothing, gifts, spices, etcs. that are available, to bring back home as gifts.
£500 would see you through…you can get beach accomodation in Goa really cheaply, a meal is less than £1.00 & travel is cheap. personally…i would take more but i am a shopaholic….but you won’t need loads of money here.
we’ve been to this place to eat & they have accomodation in Benaulim, South Goa….have a look…the food is great here!!
p.s. don’t forget you need a Visa for India!!
This is good to make a prior estimate for travel.
