I am a British citizen who would like to travel from East to West coast United States, working on the way. I expect the journey to take about 3 months, what VISA will I need and how likely is it I can do this?
Thank you.

Paul, you can travel within the United States for a maximum of 90 days without a visa, under the visa waiver program (vwp).
However you cannot legally work in the United States without a temporary work visa and these are near enough impossible to get unless you highly skilled.
This is not to stop you work „cash-in-hand”, doing the odd job here and there on the low as it were. However if you are caught or reported you could be looking at either a hefty fine and/or jail time coupled with deportation with no chance of entering the States again.
You will however require upon entering the United States a valid passport complete with a return or onward plane ticket (to show you are going back home) and show that you either have a hotel, motel or hostel room purchased for your first nights stay. You may also be asked when entering customs and immigration to provide proof of this – a printed receipt if you booked online is sufficient enough.
Other than a valid passport and a visa…(not VISA..) the most essential document you will need its a security paper printed with the picture of Benjamin Franklin…and the number 100 on it.
It may also stated..In God We Trust.
you do not need a visa. you can stay legally for 3 months. then go to Canada or Mexico for one day and then you can stay another 3 months. you can find odd jobs. just look for things to do. and ask if you can do it. for a cheap rate.
I travel all over the world doing small day to day jobs.
good luck
