My family is traveling there next summer and will fly into Shannon, but leave out of Paris. We are open to any means of travel from Shannon to London other than air – we want to try the local means of transportation. Is it better to fly into Dublin vs Shannon? We will hit Dublin as well.

Only Ryanair flies out of Shannon to London at the moment & you have a choice of flying to Gatwick, Stansted or Luton. If you want to fly into Heathrow, you would need to go to either Cork or Dublin.
You can also catch the coach from Shannon to Dublin.
Or the train from Limerick to Dublin but the train is very, very expensive.
There is a coach service between Limerick & London run by National Express, it sets off from Limerick (Colbert Station) at about 4pm with a brief stopover in Waterford (where you may have to change coaches), you take the ferry from Rosslare to Fishguard and it arrives at Victoria Coach Station in London at around 8am the next morning.
The journey on the Irish side is fairly short & not too unpleasant but I always found the stretch between Fishguard and Victoria difficult because it’s so long, they do have stops for refreshements and comfort breaks but if you have kids with you the long hours on the coach may be hard on them.
Are you just planning a quick exit to London from Ireland or do you pan on staying/visiting anywhere here?
The reason I ask is, because, If you just want to get to London without actually staying here just fly into Dublin and get a ferry/bus combo to London. Check out.
Firstly, you can get the ferry to Britain from Dublin or Rosslare.
From Dublin you have a choice of Dublin Port or Dun Laoghaire, pronounced Dun Leary (port just south of Dublin City) The two main Ferry companies are Irish Ferries and Stena line. google these companies for route options. The ferry will leave you in Holyhead in Wales or if you wanted to take in another city you could ferry to Liverpool. From Holyhead and Liverpool you can get a bus/train to London (the train from holyhead to London will include at least two changes maybe more)
From Rosslare (which is in the south east in Wexford), you would need to travel from Limerick to Rosslare Europort by train. The ferry from Rosslare leaves you in Fishguard in South Wales, from there I’m sure you could bus/train it to London but I’m not familiar with this route.
From Shannon. Its pretty much the same except you would have to make your way to Dublin, Which would mean a bus or train to Dublin from Limerick City.
If you want to see the country then definitely do the Shannon option but If you want to do things quick, fly into Dublin and take the euroline buseireann ferry/bus combo.

Without flying, the only way to go to the UK is by Ferry.
You can use buses within Ireland.
From Dublin:
get Ferry to Holyhead, Wales (1.5 hours or 3.5 hours, fast vs regular), then drive or take the train to London (approx. 4 hours).
Frankly, air travel (from Dublin or Shannon ( 2 hours) would be cheaper with RyanAir than ground travel, but you need to pay a lot for extra baggage/weight. Baggage allowence is one suitcase per preson of 20 kilos.
But if you really want to see the sites and have the extra time, ground ttravel is prettier.
get a bus (bur eireann) from shannon to dublin busaras and then get a bus (euro routes) from dublin busaras to london
bus will cost you about 15eur from snn-dub and about 20eur from dub-london
i think you can go via cork aswell but im not sure
