It’s hard to say how long it will take. It depends on how often you stop, places you visit, how fast you drive, etc…
If you plan on making stops at lots of places for activities, sight seeing, etc, it might take you anywhere from 1.5 weeks to 1 month or more.
I would map out destinations you want to visit, and different cities that you want to stop in, and plan at least 1 day at the least for every stop/city just to allow ample time.
You can use mapquest to see estimated travel times.
If you take the shortest route from NY to LA, you’re going to see a lot of nothing in between. You’ll need to do some out-of-the-way driving to get to all the major cities, and attractions.
Make sure to visit places like The Grand Canyon, or YellowStone National Park!
