I’m planning to travel to Barcelona at the end of May and one hotel is situated in Salou and the other in Calella. Salou seems to be far from the city but what about Calella. Which of the two are close to Barcelona city and can i get day tours from either locations? What is the most convenient way to see Barcelona city ? Please help.

There are trains going from Calella to Barcelona every 20-30 minutes during the day. See Click on horarios (schedule) the enter the starting and ending points (Placa de Catalunya and Barceolna Sants are the most central in Barcelona). It takes about 1:10 for the trip. Tickets are 3,40 each way.
You can actually get to Barcelona faster from Salou by train, because the trains are regional, not local (Salou is farther in distance, though). Schedules at . Note the Seleccione su idioma (choose your language) tab on the bottom to change to English. These trains are more expensive, but you can see the prices and decide for yourself.
Once in Barcelona, you can get a day ticket for local transit (metro, bus, tram). Some people prefer the Tourist Bus, which you can buy online and just hop on and off at different attraction throughout the day. Somewhat more expensive but you have to do less planning. Somewhere I have a 1-day itinerary that uses local transit. Contact me if you want me to dig it up.
Have fun!
