My wife and I are thinking about going to Malaysia in February from Seoul. The main airport is in Kuala Lumpur. Does anybody know the closest place with nice beaches? We are looking for an area that has beaches and historical areas. How far would we have to travel and how long would it take to get to this spot? Any help from previous Malaysia travellers would be a great help.

The best bet may be to get a connecting flight onto Penang or Langkawi. Penang has fascinating historical areas and beaches, temples etc and Langkawi is like paradise on earth – amazing beaches.
if you have the time visit Sabah it is a 2 1/2 hour flight from KL but one of the most beautiful places on earth
Go to Langkawi Island. That place have lot of beauty beaches, and lot of historical place..check this out for more details
Penang is the best place that will offer both beaches, touristic sites and food galore. Penang is a hub for a lot of northern island paradise. You could take a boat ride (not row boat) up to Langkawi Island, or you could fly from Penang to many other Island in Thailand. Depending on time, Penang has it all in one place for you.
Penang Island will fit your requirements. There are many popular beaches here with lots of historical areas to visit. It will take you about 45 minutes to travel by flight from Kuala Lumpur. If you travel by bus, it will probably take you 4-5 hours.
Enjoy your stay in Malaysia.
I would recommend Sabah as well, especially the islands near Sipadan. It’s beautiful and not as crowded with tourists. If you enjoy snorkeling and diving, Sabah is the place to go. Seafood is cheap as well. The downside is it’s a 2 1/2 hours flight from KL.
Penang boasts excellent food and historical places, but doesn’t do much justice for the beaches.
You could try Redang island, on the East coast of West Malaysia, or Tioman island.
