Kind of been a myth in my guard unit, but no-one seems to know a definite answer. I would really love to know if guard and reserve soldiers are supposed to be reimbursed travel expenses for drill weekends.

Yes, you do. If you travel (ordered) more than 50 miles, you are entitled to reimbursement for your travel. That includes hotels you stay in, not totalling mroe than 70 dollars a night. If you elect to travel that far, opting out of a closer drill area, you will not get reimbursed.
If you go further for drill, like you go to drill and you travel somewhere together, make sure you are on travel orders. Initial travel should be automatically added to your pay after your first couple of drills. But, if you travel somewhere else, you will need travel orders in order to get paid back the expences you get.
What sort of travel expenses are you looking for? If you are traveling more then 50 miles from your home, the unit is supposed to give you a place to stay during drill. Also, the unit is supposed to provide you with meals. However, the unit will not pay for your gas or „wear and tear” on your vehicle.
