I have traveled alone in India twice. If you speak English, you will have no problems getting around. The trains can be full to overflowing and you may want to take a taxi, rather than ride hanging out the train window on a commuter train.
Do not ever go barefoot. You can get a foot skin infection that will last the rest of your life. If this means not visiting some temples, it’s better to skip them. This applies to your hotel room and shower as well. Bring sandals or slippers. I caught this infection. In America doctors can prescibe rub-on medicines which will make it go away for a while, but it comes back and you have to use the medicines again.
Make sure that the taxi driver uses the meter. If the driver won’t, look for another taxi. Take care of this before you get into the taxi.
Always count out your money out loud when paying for anything. Otherwise the seller may try to tell you that you only gave a ten rupee note when you actually gave a 100 rupee note. Try to carry exact change. Most sellers claim not to have any change. This paragraph applies particularly to taxi drivers.
Don’t rely on standby airline bookings. You won’t get on the plane. You need a confirmed reservation with ticket or computer print-out.
Likewise, you need a written confirmed hotel reservation. The hotels overbook and you have to be firm with them. Be polite, but insist on your reservation being honored.
