I am moving to Poughkeepsie shortly, and I need to figure out the best place to stay. Is it practical to stay at New Jersey and travel daily to Poughkeepsie? If so, what is the best way to travel? If not, what is the best place to stay, where I can have an active social life?

It depends where in North Jersey you are. And, hypothetically speaking, if you’re in Bergen County and driving the commute WON’T take two hours. At best, about 80 – 90 minutes. I used to commute to Poughkeepsie during my college days so I know.
HOWEVER, if you are going to use mass transit, that may be rough goings. You would have to take Metro-North down to Grand Central, get to Penn Station and then grab an NJ Transit train to get to NJ.
You’d just be better off living up in Poughkeepsie (pick the „town” part…not the „city”). Socially…not a helluva lot much up there.
It is doable, but you need to be in northern NJ near the NJ/NY state border preferrably near I-287. It’s about 1+ hour drive.
You won’t find any active lifestyle living in Mahwah.
If you want active lifestyle, live in Manhattan and reverse-commute using Metro-North Railroad.
You can stay in Ct and find nice places.
You can take a train from the city to Poughkeepsie, but its a grind.
Why dont you want to move to Poughkeepsie, or Just across the river to New Paltz or Highland,
You say you are moving to Poughkeepsie, and want to know where to move? I am confused by your question.
No, in my opinion, it is not a distance that you’d want to commute. From north Jersey, Poughkeepsie is at least a two-hour drive; with rush hour traffic, I bet it’s closer to three or four.
